How to Beat Perfectionism and Procrastination

You might notice how these two traits go hand in hand.

I’ve certainly suffered from both over the years and I know I’m not alone.

But in today’s world where things are changing so fast, speed is more valued and more essential than ever. Initially it doesn’t need to be perfect…it needs to get done.

I just received this infographic from the folks at Strategic Coach. It paints a great picture of how you can overcome these paralyzing habits.

James Altucher – new book and report

altucher-sitting-small

I’ve been signed up to James blog for sometime now. This guy cracks me up…and he’s smart as hell. He’s got books and podcasts and is an idea man.

Serious street smarts and it would take me way to long to give you the background if you’ve never heard of him. I’ll let you check that out on your own and it’s partly why I’m posting this.

What I will say is that he’s made and lost millions many times…he’s bought, sold, lost and acquired more and varied business at 46 than most people will in a lifetime.

His posts come from the heart and his candid advice always is about what he believes or what worked or didn’t work for him. You may not agree and it may not work for you. No problem.

I liked his book Choose Yourself and I don’t even feel a need to explain the title. His recent book is Choose Yourself for Wealth. Love this book.

James has started the Altucher Report and it’s a subscription based newsletter with lots of bonuses. The new book was a bonus with sign up and is the premise of the report. There are other book bonuses and I’m looking forward to the monthly newsletter.

I want to give you the highlights of what I gleaned from the book, but I suggest you buy it or get it with the report. I have nothing to gain but I thought it was 39.00 well spent so far!

  • ideas are linked to creating wealth
  • come up with 10 ideas every day ( see Claudia’s {his wife} book also w report )
  • ideas create seeds of abundance
  • get 1% better each week
  • give to your network
  • embrace his daily practice – physical, emotional, mental, spiritual
  • choose yourself with peace, abundance and gratitude
  • make your own choices or someone else will make them for you
  • watch comedians for tips on speaking
  • forget the excuses
  • validate yourself through your work
  • show people what saying yes will look like for them
  • write everyday
  • invest in yourself and your ideas…if they make sense (they all won’t – but you knew that)

Of course I could go on and on but the back stories and real life examples and his look towards 7 trends for the future I think are spot on. It’s interesting to get his perspective. if you read my posts here or on my E2mag site you’ll see I’m always quoting Peter Diamandis because he’s really got his pulse on the future too.

If you want to learn more about James and/or sign up for his blog or see about the report then check him out James Altucher or the Altucher Report

It’s a New Year !

I love January (except the weather)

So much excitement…new year, new possibilities, new goals, new habits and technology is just going to rip like never before.

Have you ever been to the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas? It starts tomorrow. I haven’t been for about 3 years and I’m itching to get back.

I mean guess who the keynote speakers is…Dieter Zetsche of Mercedes-Benz. Now why the head honcho of a car company? Well you ain’t seen nothing yet when you see how connected cars are becoming. They used to be at the show just to show off speakers and audio systems of various vendors. Now they are taking out their own booths and their product is a big part of the show.

You should check out the show here and get the news updates.

Finally – Tony Robbins uncovers the keys to investing

tony robins

Tony gets access to the real investor strategies we need to know

And, he exposes what your financial advisors don’t want you to know.

It’s no secret that Tony Robbins has helped millions of people in the areas of personal development/motivation and he’s accumulated an impressive personal fortune in the process.

But he also puts his money and his efforts to good use too. In fact he’s feeding 50 million people on his own and partnering with others with a goal for 100 million.

The proceeds from his new book are going towards this cause.

Now he wants to educate us on how to manage our money.

I would encourage you to read/listen to Tony describe what’s in the book or just go buy it. It’s on offer in the US for just shipping and handling but here in Canada you’ll have to get it at the bookstore or kindle version.

I can’t wait to get mine. I have listened to interviews with Tony by Tim Ferris and another with Joe Polish and a group of folks who asked him questions. James Altucher has an interesting take on it as well.

Get it for yourself! Get it for your kids!

They don’t teach this shit in school 🙂

August E2mag on the newsstand and full of great Marketing and Sales info for small biz!

E2 issue 5 ipad

The August issue is a little different than the previous four issues. Normally I write a few articles and preview some of my guest posts. This time I wrote the feature article and it was about 5500 words so it’s pretty substantial.

It’s all about why sales and marketing is the lifeblood of any business. I take a look at some of the mistakes many businesses are making and then provide some solutions on how they can improve their efforts.

Of course all of this dovetails into my core business at Razor Smart Marketing and my consulting for small business. It’s a combination of the strategies I use that are part of the power marketing network I belong to. It’s from learnings from some of the best sales and marketing folks in the business world. And it’s from my own many years of experience working with people in both large and small businesses, seeing what works and being nimble enough to keep up and take advantage of the fast pace and change in business today.

Marketing and SalesE25768x1024PNG

The beauty of it is…some of the most important things haven’t changed in hundreds of years. Can you guess what it is? It’s how humans react and think about things when it comes to being sold. This is why the strategic marketing messaging is so important to form the basis of the marketing plan and the communications across multiple channels.

I hope you check out the article and the issue.

Are you Abundance minded?

abundance

So much negativity in the news these days. I guess it’s what gets the readers, makes the headlines. It kinda sucks.

What if we all concentrated on the more positive things that are going on in the world. The things that amazing people are doing who do not let fear, doubt or especially – “you can’t do that” even enter their minds.

Well Peter Diamandis of Xprize fame and Abundance360 is creating a weekly video series to bring forward all these great things.

Check out this short vid where he explains what he’s doing:

Gratitude – what a gift

gratitude

This is a photo I took from my deck the other morning. It’s so cool that I have figured out how to make my own picture quotes. You can do it in powerpoint or keynote easily.

I had recently penned an article that will appear in a couple of days in my E2magazine about gratitude.

One of my best buddies Kevin recently lost his Dad very suddenly. It was a week before he was to arrive in Vancouver…the funeral was last weekend…very tough loss for him.

Yesterday was spent in reflection and remembering a good friend of mine who passed away last week as well. His funeral and then celebration was yesterday.

Dougie passed suddenly while playing volleyball. Obviously it was a shock. Only days before we had played, BBQ’d and thrown sticks in the water for his black lab Romeo.

It’s a tremendous loss for his family, friends and all who met him. There were 100’s at the church yesterday…this was a man that was truly loved. And certainly a huge reason for that was his positive attitude, the way he treated people and the way you felt good when you were around him. It was a wonderful service and then a celebration of his life was held after at the balmy beach club overlooking the lake and volleyball courts where he loved to be. Our mutual friend Brett had some great words and insight into Dougie for the guests at the Balmy and those who spoke at the church were very good too.

I felt sadness yesterday but also gratitude for having know Dougie. It reminds you to make sure you express your gratitude to the people you know and love.

On that note, you can check out my article below.

God Bless Tony and Dougie.

Do you like watching webinars?

darren-hardygenius networkI admit…I’m a bit of a webinar freak. I mean it’s not unusual for me to do 2-4 webinars in a week. Now if I’m really interested and want to interact then I watch them live. If not or I have a conflict then I just sign up anyway and wait for the replay. The replay is more productive because you can fast forward.

I just posted a review of two webinars I was on yesterday over on my blog at Empowered Entrepreneur. They were with Darren Hardy of Success Magazine and Joe Polish of the Genius Network.

Check out this post from Peter Diamandis on Whats App

whatsapp

In February of this year, Facebook’s $19B acquisition of mobile messaging platformWhatsApp set a record for the largest software acquisition of all time. It set the value of WhatsApp at more than Sony Corporation.

Last week, the 5-year-old startup broke yet another impressive record — 64 BILLION messages processed in 24 hours. To give you some perspective, that is 10 times the amount sent in the entire US text message industry in one day. That is just insane!

I wanted to share this story with you to discuss 3 key observations:

1) 6 D’s Update – Disruptive and Demonetizing the wireless communications industry: WhatsApp is a $1-per-year service with 465M users. These users are sending 20B messages and receiving 44B messages every day. WhatsApp is both disrupting and demonetizing the entire wireless industry, and now the Facebook acquisition provides the infrastructure needed for WhatsApp to begin offering voice calls. So instead of people paying on average $80 per month, users only have to pay $1 per year for the same services. Wireless carriers, beware. This shift could disrupt more than $100B in annual wireless revenues.

Canada’s Gold Medal Hockey

olympic gold

Well Canada secured it’s men’s gold medal Sunday morning. They beat the Swedes soundly while thousands of Canadians cheered loudly from their gathering places in the early hours. How they got there will be forgotten…more on that in a minute.

The women won their gold in much more dramatic fashion beating the US in overtime and having to score 2 goals in the dying minutes of the third period to send it to that overtime. The US was devastated.

What were the lessons?

Well the women just never gave up even when it looked bleak. Their coach was calm and kept them focused. They believed in themselves and just kept attacking. And the clutch players came up big as they usually do in these circumstances. It is no accident. They actually visualize getting the goal or making the play that makes the difference and then execute it.

And what about the men…the skilled NHL players. Well, they had been taking flack most of the games for not scoring. Sidney Crosby got his first goal in the gold medal game…the second and really insurance goal but it was important and that’s what he does. But the players and coaches were not worried about the lack of scoring. They were winning games. Their defence was awesome. The bigger ice surface traditionally yields less scoring…but the media and fans forgot about those things…they like goals. The team stayed it’s course and got the job done. They have the gold medal.

As entrepreneurs the lessons are simple…belief in yourself, putting your game-plan in place, playing right to the end like there’s no way you will accept defeat. Gold is sweet

Are New Years Resolutions BS?

2014

So people have been making New Years resolutions for decades. How’s that been working for them? One word, TERRIBLE!

The number of folks that are actually able to start, implement and see through whatever resolutions they made at the start of the year is 8%. And a sincere congratulations to you if you are one of those 8%.

What happened to the other 92%. They failed. They gave up. They went back to status quo. They returned to their comfort zone. They weren’t really committed. That sucks!

What’s the excuse? Life got in the way? My intentions were good but? It was too hard? I’ll try again when the timing is better.

Let’s face it, this is a repeatable pattern that needs a new approach. It’s something that is required in all you do in business and life. And for the same reasons that some fail in their efforts to realize their general goals in life, having the intention or a resolution isn’t enough.

There are a number of leaders who are proposing a better way. It’s about creating rituals and habits in order to make the kind of changes you’d like to make. Robin Sharma who was featured in December issue of E2mag has been promoting this for a long time. And the other day I saw a video from Jeff Walker that if you have 5 minutes go take a look. Jeff is an unbelievable guy, very authentic and knows a thing or two about creating and getting things done and wrote the book about product launches. You’ll thank me for introducing you to him.

Since trying to get more exercise is one of the all-time favorite resolutions let’s examine why so many people fail.

Sure they start out with great intentions. in fact I see them all out there already in the two gyms I belong too. And on one hand I give them credit because they are making an effort: even though it’s now a little more inconvenient for me because it’s more crowded. But it won’t last and by the end of the month things will be back to normal. Why?, because it’s willy nilly. They won’t commit to a time. Life will get in the way. They will get a cold, or one of the kids will ( you can workout at home ).

Make a time..stick to it…if you have to bail re-schedule.
If you are a morning person do it then. It really sets up your day and it’s done.
Of course it would be nicer to stay in bed. But when you get there you are happy.
If you are not a morning person then do lunch, afternoon or evening…pick a time that will let you win.
Just get started…maybe a gym is not for you…maybe yoga…or simply start walking.
Maybe you need a push or a little help…check out nerd fitness
Can you work out with a buddy which helps commit to a time?
Do you need some instruction…book a personal trainer = help, plus again a commitment.
Lot’s of ways to create a routine.

Make it a habit. Make it a ritual. Incorporate it into your lifestyle. Enjoy it!

How many ways could we all make significant positive changes in our lives with this approach. Wouldn’t it be great if people stopped saying ” I’m not making any new years resolutions this year because I never keep them”.

Happy New Year

Mike Koenigs latest Launch

2013-10-12 rocktoberfest 5308

I spent several days in San Diego with Mike Koenigs and hundreds of like-minded people a few weeks ago. We got a preview of his latest program that he launched this week with biz partner Ed Rush called Top Gun Toolkit.

It’s designed to take your consulting biz to mach speed and provides amazing technology tools that are second to none. One of the programs instantly creates a mobile website. Apparently most websites still are not mobile friendly. If you have a business you better make sure your site works on mobile devices.

King of Infomercials

2013-10-13 Rocktoberfest kevin h

I was at an amazing conference in San Diego and one of the key speakers was Kevin Harrington. Kevin basically pioneered the direct response and infomercial category starting back in the late 80’s.

He’s done over 4 billion in sales and a bunch of it was with Tony Little who is still rocking products and he is a billion dollar brand in his own right. How about George Forman, Jack Lalan

Kevin was on one of the original sharks on Shark Tank. Of his 175 appearances he did about 20 deals. He is Chairman of As Seen On TV which sells all infomercial products online and helped establish the Entrepreneurs Association and the Electronic Retailers Association.

Here’s Kevin’s 5 tips to follow in your business.

1. Develop the perfect pitch…30 seconds, 1 minute, and 2 min pitches
2. Publish…you need to have ownership of your niche
3. Productize…you have to unpack your unique value proposition
4. Publicity and profile…be everywhere
5. Create partnerships to help you succeed

Can you meditate?

Of course you can…but do you? It’s so nice to take a break, give your mind a rest, cut out the constant chatter and messages and distractions.

Initially I found it somewhat daunting but have learned over time and doing it consistently really makes a difference.

Chip Wilson of Lululemon and his wife Shannon have started a new business Whil.com They are convinced that we all could use some form of meditation and I’m excited to see where they are taking this.

Check out this vid on how to meditate in 60 seconds. Try it!

Shine those shoes!

A pet peeve of mine has always been scuffy shoes. Especially for casual or full-on business atire. Get it right guys!

Tim Ferris is at it again!

I’ve been following Tim Ferris for some time now. This guy is the real deal and he is having a profound effect on how people and businesses operate today.

While I personally have devoured his books and am actively following many of his health and fitness principles outlined in the 4 hour body; his investing and mentoring of startups is now heading into a whole new realm.

You can invest with him via his Angel list for as little as $2,500.00
